Lieut Jacobus "Jacob" Loper
Learn about sponsoring this memorial...
Birth: Feb. 25, 1616
Stockholms lšn, Sweden
Death: 1652
New York, USA

Married Cornelia Melyn 30 June 1647 in New Amsterdam, New Nederland. He was known as as Jacob Lagt de Loper, a Swedish ship's captain.
Originally, this memorial attributed the middle name of "Teunissen" to Jacobus Loper. Recently, information provided by Charles Solomon, # 48727306, demonstrates that this attribution was incorrect; thus the middle name of "Teunissen" has been removed. The information provided by Mr Solomon follows:
"In early Records of Albay, 1:246, his name is given as Jacobus Teunisse, alias de Looper. By his mark, which resembles the commercial symbol for number, he seems well identified with Jacob Teunissen Quick (Notarial Papers 1:191), who belonged to an English family which at an early date settled in New Amsterdam and descendants of which are still found in Ulster County. As "de Looper" means "the runner," it is likely that this designation was a play upon the English name of Quick. According to Records of New Amsterdam, 6:307, Jacob Looper's wife was named Neeltie Cornelius, which again identifies him with Jacob Theuniszen, from Naerden, who in 1655 married at New Amsterdam Neeltje Cornelius, from Amsterdam. Jacob Teunissen de Looper should not be confused, as has been done in the index to the Records of New Amsterdam, with Capt. Jacob Loper from Stockholm, who in 1647 married Cornelia, the eldest daughter of Cornelius Mely, and who died before April 1655, when his widow married Jacob Schellinger."
