Joseph Thorbecke, safe expert, dies.

Stroke of paralysis cause of death - had helped out many banks.

Safe mover, dealer and expert for years, death at 12:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon claimed Joseph Thorbecke, one of the city's most interesting men. He suffered a stroke of paralysis eight weeks ago which resulted in his death.
His face and figure were familiar in all parts of the city and will be missed by many. A dealer in safes for thirty-five years, it was said of Mr. Thorbecke that he knew the business inside and out. He was adept at opening safes where the combination or key had been lost and where the iron boxes had been tampered with by burglars or damaged by fires.

His services were in constant demand, not only in this city but in the surrounding counties. Despite his advanced age, 83 years, he was active and his hearing remained clear, enabling him to open a safe by listening to the click of the tumblers.

Joseph came from Neukirche, Germany when 21 years old and lived for a while in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his early years he followed the trade of a tailor.

He had been married fifty-six years and leaves a wife, Frances, and five children: John and Frank Thorbecke, Mrs. Rose Higdon, Mrs. Sid Isaac and Mrs. Mamie Wipf, besides a sister in Germany, who is in a convent, and a brother, Henry, who is ill of paralysis at the Walker hospital.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at the residence, 507 Ingle street, followed by solemn requiem high mass at 9 o'clock at Holy Trinity Catholic church. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's cemetery.
