His death announcement in the May 8, 1790 edition of the Litchfield Monitor reads:
DIED, on Monday last, Captain Edward Phelps, aged 93. He emigrated into this town the second summer after the expulsion of the Indians — about 68 years since. He possessed great native strength of mind, but had only that education which was common to the youth of his country at that early period of its settlement. He acquired a large landed interest, purely by the efforts of that honest industry, which was the peculiar but laudable characteristic of the first settlers of this country. He was a warm and constant attendant to the duties of the Christian religion, both in public and private. He always afforded a ready, generous and charitable hand to the poor of his district. He lived and died an honest man — and at the close of his long pilgrimage, could take a retrospect of a well spent life, with that joy and consolation peculiar to a peaceful conscience, and an approving Heaven.
