Betty Jean Turnbull, 84, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend to many, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. Betty was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Ottawa, Kan., to Opal and Russell Darnold. She was a graduate of the Wymore, Neb., High School. Betty met the love of her life, David Turnbull, at the Snyder Ice cream shop where she dipped many a cone of black walnut ice cream for her future husband. Soon, David was enlisted into the Navy and Betty enjoyed sending letters from home. After returning home, they were married in 1948. Betty and Dave spent the first part of their lives in Beatrice and Omaha, Neb. They were blessed with two daughters. David's career led them to Overland Park, Kan., and onto Fort Worth in 1972. Betty embraced the Texas lifestyle. She was a vital member of the Fort Worth, Meadowbrook United Methodist Church. She loved knitting for the Women's Prayer Shawl ministry and was a active member of the UMW. Betty always put others first. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her book club group. Betty was a skilled seamstress and garden enthusiast. She and Dave enjoyed traveling together. Betty will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Her kindness and sweet Christian spirit touched many lives. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Opal Darnold; brother, Wendell Darnold; and sister, Marilyn Coyle. Betty is survived by her husband, 2 daughters, 4 grandsons and five great grandchildren. Following a private burial, a celebration of Betty's life was held July 27, 2013 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Lincoln, Nebraska.
