Nathalie J Heckenberg, 92, of Holtville, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 29, [2006] at El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Nathalie was born April 16, 1914 in St. Louis, MO.

She came to Holtville more than sixty years ago as the young bride of the Rev. E.W. Heckenberg.

They were married in St, Louis on Aug. 15, 1943.

Her life was filled with music. Prior to her marriage she sang with the St. Louis Grand Opera Company for three seasons and had her own radio program. She was invited to study on a full scholarship at La Scala in Milan, Italy, but World War II interfered with this opportunity.

An accomplished pianist and organist, she played regularly for worship services at St. Paul's until a few years ago. For more than fifty years she gave piano lessons.

She is the former president of the Imperial Valley Branch of the California Music Teachers Association.

A charter member of the Holtville Soroptimist Club, Mrs. Heckenberg was named a "Woman of Distinction" in 1988, and had held every office in the club at least once. She was twice named Grand Marshall of the Holtville Carrot Festival, the last time in 1999. She was also a former president of the Holtville PTA.

Mainly Mrs. Heckenberg loved church work. She once said:
"It seems like God led my life that way, to the point of even marrying a minister. St. Paul's is my church and my home," she said. "These are my people. When something happens to them, it happens to me. When they are sad, I am sad, and when they are happy, I am happy with them."

A tireless, enthusiastic worker, Mrs. Heckenberg served as Sunday School Superintendent and Choir Director at the church for decades. She started teaching Sunday School at Concordia Lutheran Church in Maplewood, Mo. when she was 15, and continued teaching for the next seventy years.

Mrs. Heckenberg was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. E.W. Heckenberg, and her four sisters: Emily Sonnenberg, Rita Schomogyi, Emma Werne and Julia Naughton.

Funeral services, under the direction of Hems Bros. Mortuary, will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Holtville. The Rev. Keith Reich will officiate.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Heckenberg is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Heckenberg-Garner and Gerald Garner of Minden, NV., and various nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the loving care given to Mrs. Heckenberg the last four years by Christina Zaragoza, and the last year by Veronica Bustamante and Nora Gonzalez. They also acknowledge the many kindnesses of her neighbor, David Miller.

Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Organ Fund, 562 Chestnut Ave., Holtville, CA. 92250.
