James was born in New York, the son of Titus Crofoot and Polly (Davis) Crofoot. He was the brother of Oren Crofoot. He married Sibbie J. He was a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and a farmer. Their children are James H., Horace, Benjamin, Kuziah J., Milo D., and Alice. His family pioneered west to Michigan, and were among the first of many families of settlers (Cochran, Lawrence, Carrier, Cotrell, Ogden, Nicholas, Gillette, Chapman, Jocelyn, Drinkwater, Davis, Wiggins, Souter, Scott, Lyons, Robinson, Smith, Huff, Campbell, Horton, and Crofoot), all of whom came to the Holland area from the east. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alice M. and son, Horace T.
