Birth: 1840
Herkimer County
New York, USA
Death: Apr. 2, 1881
Chippewa Falls
Chippewa County
Wisconsin, USA

Sophia "Sophie" Van Alstyne, the fourth of six children of Nicholas and Elizabeth Van Alstyne, was born in 1840 in New York. By 1850 her family had moved to Wisconsin but by 1860 they had settled in Illinois. Sophie married Josiah Noonan Phillips on the 4th of February 1868 in Kane, Illinois. She and Josiah became the parents of two children - Vernon Daniel "Varney" Phillips (1868 to 1947) and William Bert Phillips (1870 to 1961).

After the birth of their two sons, the Phillips family moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin where she lived for about ten years before her death. She and Josiah were married for thirteen years.

Chippewa Times 13 April 1881

The Black River Falls Independent has the following kind words for Mrs. J. N. Phillips, whose death occurred last week: Mrs. J. N. Philips, wife of Rev. J. N. Phillips, died at her home in Chippewa Falls, April 2nd, 1881. A good woman has gone to her heavenly reward. A devoted wife, a self sacrificing mother, a Christian whose daily life was an influence for good, now rests from her labors, and her "works do follow her." The deceased lady had many friends in this village who unite in expressions of sympathy for the bereaved family.

21 April 1881 Juneau County Argus (page 2)

The friends of Rev. J. N. Phillips of Chippewa Falls will regret to learn of the death of his estimable wife which sad event occurred on the 2nd inst. The lamented deceased was highly esteemed for her many exemplary qualities and will be missed in many circles but nowhere as much as by her widowed husband and motherless children. She was sick for a long time, her disease being consumption.
