Arthur L. Adams aged 72 retired leather manufacturer and one of the city's leading citizens died suddenly Saturday afternoon about 1 in his home, 507 South Market street.
He was stricken with a heart attack about 11:30 while shopping in the Wilson market, 4 South Perry street, and was taken to his home where Dr. Avery H. Sarno was summoned. The doctor was called back a second time shortly before Mr. Adams passed away. He had a slight attack of a similar nature three years ago.
A lifelong resident of this city, Mr. Adams was born Aug 26 1878, son of John Adams and Phoebe Miller.
He received his education in Johnstown High school and Albany Business college, upon completion of which he was bookeeper for a time with the former Riton (?) Glove Co.
About 30 years ago Mr. Adams, and his brother, William J., joined the leather business founded by their father, and the Adams mill on Crescendoe Road, which was one of the largest and finest in Fulton county.
Mr. Adams disposed of his interest in the business July 1 1934, and had since led a retired life.
Hw was a 32 degree mason, member of St. Patrick's 4 F&AM, Johnstown Chapter, 78, RAMM, Johnstown Council, 72, R&SM., and served as member of the building committee whe the present Masonic temple was erected.
Mr. Adams was director and vice president of Johnstown Public Library.
For 60 years he had been a prominent member of the Methodist church, having served as member of the Official Board 45 years, Sunday School Superintendent, trustee steward, treasurer and lay representative to the Troy conference and for 30 years teacher of the Berean class.
The organ in this church, one of the finest in this part of the state was a gift from him, his father and brother.
Quiet and reserved in manner at all times, Mr. Adams was a man of highest principles and integrity and his exemplary life and habits earned for him the regard and esteem of a wide circle of friends throughout the community.
Mr. Adams was twice married, his first wife Lottie Porter of Gloversville. They were wed in 1900 and she passed away in 1920. Two years later he married Mina Bristol of Tupper Lake.
She is the only survivor with the excepton of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The body was removed to the Brown & Ehle funeral home, to be prepared for interment, and was returned to the family home yesterday morning. It will remain there until tomorrow morning at 10, when it will again be taken to the funeral home, where the service will be held at 2. The Rev. Frank Jay Reid will officiate. Interment will be in Fern Dale cemetery.
