J.S. Erwin, whose death took place at Marshalltown on Wednesday of last week, was born near Sedalia, Missouri, in 1862. He lost his father in the war and the mother took the family to Kentucky and later to Illinois and finally in 1873 to Tama county. They had no children but several years ago they took two children, Lina and Reuben Hegardt, who were orphaned, and ever since have given them a home. Mr. Erwin had acquired a competency before his death, owning several properties in Marshalltown, some western lands and considerable securities and cash.
The funeral service was at the home in Marshalltown, where they have lived the past four years, the service being conducted by the Elks lodge, of which he was a member.
James S. Erwin and Viola Harris were married in Tama county, Iowa August 11, 1886. The marriage is recorded in Book D, Page 354.
