William Gardner was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1914. He studied at the Royal College of Art, London. A coin designer, engraver, calligrapher and writer who worked regularly for the Royal Mint over a 30 year period. The English and Scottish design shillings, issued after Elizabeth II became Queen, were Gardner's designs, as was the iconic ‘portcullis' threepence. One of his last commissions was to design the twenty pence coin of which over three billion were minted between 1982 and 2008.
