EAGLE VALLEY
None of the early residents of Eagle Valley was better known than Calvin D. Andrus (Doc Andrus to almost everyone). He was born in Vermont on August 8, 1837. At an early age he moved to New York state. Before the Civil war he moved to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. When the war came on he enlisted in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry and was discharged from service after the close of the war, in 1865. He then moved to Martin county, Minnesota, and lived there until 1872, when he moved to Blue Hill county and resided at Sterling until 1882., when he came directly to Eagle Valley. Here he was employed hauling brick from the Eagle Valley yards to Longhouse. He was a carpenter by trade and there are few of the good buildings in this region that do not bear his handiwork.

With advancing years he began to feel that there might be a climate more suitable to him, and he loaded a car with his belongings and shipped everything to Roseburg, Oregon where he resided at the time of his death on April 24, 1913.

Before the Civil war he married Miss Sarah Aldrich, who died at Roseburg on November 9, 1910. Mr. and Mrs. Andrus were survived by seven children, only four of whom we can remember the names, Frank, George, Charles, Justina.

In the days when Clarissa carried the banner in baseball matters in central Minnesota, the four Andrus brothers were important factors in the success of the club.

Note: The author of this 1937 biography (22 years after his death) was incorrect about Calvin's place and year of birth, and his year of death. The other locations and events are relatively accurate.
