Driver Dies in Crossing Crash Robert Newell, 45, ALBION Robert J. Newell, 45, governor of Albion Lodge No. 406, Loyal Order of Moose, was killed at 2:43 a. m. Sunday when a westbound New York Central freight train struck his auto at the North Superior street crossing.
Engineer G. F. Ahrens, of Jackson, told police that the train was traveling at about 27 miles an hour as block signals west of the local depot were still against it.
He said Newell ignored warning bells. Newell's old model sedan was struck just back of the driver's seat and carried by the train a block and a half west to the local depot.
Newell was dead when admitted to Sheldon Memorial hospital. Death was due to a head injury and fractured neck.
Justice of the Peace H. B. Weeks acted as coroner and indicated an inquest unnecessary. Newell, a native of Chicago, came here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert ,W. Newell. 222 W. Cass street, when 15 years old. He had lived here since. He managed a Miller-Jones shoe store in the 1920 s and also stores at Ionia and Owosso for short periods thereafter.
Since 1930, he had been connected with the Union Steel Products Co. here in its bakery oven department. He was elected Moose lodge governor this spring.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife. Mrs. Mable Newell, four daughters. Mrs. Darleen Mayo, Moscow, and Carimae. Phyllis and Midgie Newell, all at home; a son, Robert James Newell. Albion; two brothers. Earl Newell, Marshall, and James Newell, Parma; and three sisters. Mrs. Vera Quick and Mrs. Evna Burden, both of Marshall, Mrs. Viola Styles, Albion.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 at the Graves and King home for funerals. Dr. F. S. Goodrich officiating; burial in Riverside Cemetery."
