After helping establish the Lorfeld homestead in Meeme, Wisconsin, John moved to Minnesota with his brother Henry to pursue employment in the sawmill business. In 1859, John Lorfeld built a saw-mill on Carver Creek. This was the first mill in Dahlgren Township, and was operated about 10 years.
On May 30, 1862, a marriage between "Johann Larfeld" and "Maria Loepel" was recorded in Carver, Minnesota. Family lore says that "John married a widow with one child." In the 1870 federal census of Dahlgren Township, "Bella Thompson", age 10, was living with them. In the 1875 state census, Bella is absent, and 3-year-old Kate Lorfeld, born in NY, is listed as their daughter.
In 1872, John became Dahlgren's first postmaster. The post office was located in his hotel and store known as "The Old Farmer's House" on the Carver and Glencoe road.
A Nov. 12, 1885 newspaper article in Carver county's Weekly Valley Herald reported: "John Lorfeld of Dahlgren, an old and prominent settler of that town, has sold his store and five acres of land to the Hendricks Bros. of Minneapolis, and in part payment for the same took a house and lot on 19'th Ave. South, Minneapolis. As soon as he disposes of his other personal property at auction, he [will] move to that city and make it his future home. We wish him success in whatever he may undertake."
In 1886, the family moved to the house on 19'th Avenue in Minneapolis, where John established and operated a grocery store until his death.
