Oakley Elmer "Stubb" Mitchell of Secor, Illinois (formerly of Kansas City), age 86, died on August 6, 1999 at Normal, Illinois hospital. He was born on May 27, 1913 in Clinton County, Missouri to Elmetta (Mett) Mitchell (1897-1982) and Wilbur Benjamin Heffner (1892-1957).
He had four sisters: Lilly Lolita Mitchell Gardner Watson (1917-1999), Leona Faye Mitchell (1920-2002), Lula Margarette Mitchell (1922-1979), and Opal Louis Mitchell Berry (1928-2008). He also had three half sisters: Wanda Belk, Nancy Streeter, Alice Nelson and one half brother Alva Winfield Heffner.
He married Virginia May Abels on June 17, 1936 and to this union had four children: Geneva May Mitchell Overby (1937-2006), Oakley Thomas Mitchell, Wayne Mitchell, and James Irwin Mitchell (1943-1944).
He then married Joyce Columbine Gann (1930-1994) on December 22, 1949 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, and they had two children Mary Montez "Tessie" Mitchell (1953-1985) and Emma Mitchell Orr.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a former member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Kansas City.
Services were held at 10:00 am Wednesday at Parklawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas City. Visitation was at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Kidney Foundation.
