Charles C. Ward was a 17-year-old resident at Sudbury, Vermont, when he enlisted as a private for 9 months on August 18, 1862. Private Ward was mustered into Company G, 12th Vermont Infantry, on October 4, 1862. He was mustered out at Brattleboro, Vermont, July 14, 1863. Charles re-enlisted as a private for 3 years on December 8, 1863. Private Ward was mustered into Company H, 5th Vermont Infantry, January 4, 1864. He was severely wounded in action during the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, on May 5, 1865, and hospitalized. He filed for a Civil War veterans disability pension May 23, 1865, and received application No. 69,282 and certificate No. 44,410. Private Ward was discharged for disability on June 4, 1865. After his death in 1908 his widow Sarah moved to Kansas where she filed for a Civil War widow's pension November 25, 1916, and received application No. 1,076,675. A certificate number was not found.
