|Birth: ||Sep. 14, 1907|
|Death: ||Aug. 16, 1973|
He was born in either Irwin County or Appling County, GA. His parents were James W., a farmer, and Rodah/Rhoda (nee Troup). Siblings included Emma Lou (later King), James H., Ruby (Hallman), Simon E, Essie May (Harris), and Frederick C. Per the 1910 Census, their neighbors included the Troups, the Boatrights, and the Barnards.
On the 1920 Census, the Barnes family were living in the Thornton-Surrency area of Appling County.
Circa 1928, Charles seems to have married Johnnie Mae Whiddon of Arabi, GA. The marriage may have been in Appling County, or possibly Dooly County, where Johnnie Mae's parents were married.
Also that year, Charles, Johnnie Mae, and Fred C. seem to have moved to Miami, Florida, per listings for them in the Miami City Directory. Charles and Fred were working for Ungar Buick; Charles was listed as a mechanic's helper, and Fred was a mechanic.
Children of Charles and Johnnie included Doris Patricia, Rhoda Jane, Charles Jr, and Eddie.
In 1929, Charles was listed as a mechanic. By 1931, Charles was a "batteryman" at Firestone Tire Co. As of the 1935 Census, he was a mechanic again. By 1941, Charles was a "lubrication man" at Shaw Brothers Oil Co. John L. Barnes also worked there, and may have been a cousin.
Circa 1945, Charles and Johnnie Mae seem to have divorced. As of the 1945 Florida state Census, Barney and Johnnie Baskin were living with Charles' children, who had kept the Barnes name (except daughter Doris, who had married Eston Carter).
Johnnie's last child with Charles seems to have been Lenny Barnes, who was age 2 in 1945.
As of August 1967, there's a Dade County marriage record of a Charles M Barnes wed to a Jennie Mae Herring (Cert #32742, Vol. 2550.)
A 1968 Miami deed shows that a Charles and Jennie Mae Barnes sold a property to George V. and Mary E. Mappin, possibly so that they could move closer to Jennie's children in Duval County.
According to an obituary for Charles (The Florida Times Union, Aug 18, 1973, p. c.8), they moved to Jacksonville circa 1970, where Charles died three years later. He left behind daughter Rhoda Jane and five sons: Charles Jr, Eddie, Leonard, Jimmy, and Robert.
Since Jimmy and Robert were not the children of Johnnie Mae, and Jennie Mae would have been about 58 at the time of their marriage, this suggests that Charles may have had a wife between Johnnie Mae and Jennie Mae.
He was buried at Wesley Chapel Cem. in Alma, GA with some of his family.
Jennie Mae died in 1997, and was buried in Jacksonville.
