Funeral services for Paul D. Amo, age 84, of County Route 4, Ogdensburg will be held Monday, July 8, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at Notre Dame Church with Bishop Terry LaValley officiating will full military honors. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Monday, July 8, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Frary Funeral Home. Mr. Amo passed away July 4, 2013 after being in the hospital for one day.
Mr. Amo is survived by his loving wife, Laurine; three children, Scott A. Amo and his wife, Patty, of Plattsburgh, Lavonne Mills-De Sanctis and her husband, Dennis, of Staten Island; and Paul J. Amo ("PJ") and his wife, Kristine, of Summerfield, FL; seven grandchildren, Jason and Jonathan Amo, Thomas and Timothy Mills, Apryl Jackson, and Ashley and Andrew Amo; and five great grandchildren, Timothy and Daniel Mills, Blake and Benjamin Jackson and Gavin Miles. He was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Arthur Amo.
Mr. Amo was born on October 22, 1928 in Ogdensburg, the son of James and Irene Lesperance Amo. He attended local schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948. From 1946-1948 he served on the U.S.S. Macon (CA32 – heavy cruiser). He also served on the Oregon City (also a heavy cruiser) and the CASU 21 in Norfolk, VA. He married Laurine Cutway on May 17, 1957 at the Baptist Church with Rev. Bartman officiating. His first marriage to Katherine DeCarr ended in divorce.
Mr. Amo worked for the Laborers Local Union 322 from 1954 to 1990, retiring due to health reasons. He worked on the Seaway Project, the U.S./Canadian Bridge in Ogdensburg, and the local prison project where he held the positions of foreman and steward. Mr. Amo was very active in coaching baseball. He also played softball for the Ogdensburg Maples, Darrow's Hotel, Pete's Café, Snyder's Tavern, Duffy's Tavern, Doyle's Lumber among others and was a well-known short stop. Mr. Amo was a past member of the Ogdensburg Elks. He enjoyed going to the casino and golfing. He was an avid bowler at one time. He was also a past trustee for Local 322. He was a known jokester. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren, nephews and neice and dearly loved his two cats.
