John Wesley Austin was born Jan.4,1840 at Pleasant Hill, near Mt. Pleasant, Clinton Co., Ohio the son of Rev. David Sharp Austin and Sarah Rebecca Woodmansee.
He enlisted as a 21 yr. old on July 1,1861 at Bellevue, Jackson Co., Iowa as 4th Corp. in Co. I, 5th Iowa Infantry. His maternal Uncle Wesley W. Woodmansse age 35, also enlisted as 3rd Corp. of the company. John received from the Q.M. Dept. on July 25,1862; 2 pair of infantry pants, 1 pair of pegged shoes, and 4 pair of woolen socks. He was severely wounded in the face May 16,1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. Promoted to 2nd Lt. on June 21,1863 he was elevated again on Aug.6,1863 to 1st Lt. He is listed as 1st Lt. joined the Co. on Oct.1,1863 on a Co. return dated Oct. 30,1863. He was captured with his company Nov.25,1863 at the Battle of Mission Ridge near Chattanooga, Tn. After enduring a long captivity he was discharged March 12,1865.
He married Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Gurnee Warren in Nashville, Tn. on Jan.1,1871 and adopted her daughter, Lilly, from her previous marriage.
John filed for an invalid pension on Feb.14,1879 and received certificate # 167.672.
In the 1880 Federal Census for Nashville, Tn. he is found as a 41 yr. old concrete paver with a 35 yr. old wife suffering from paralysis.
The Tennessee City Death Records for Nashville, Tn. list; John W. Austin, age 42, died April 19,1882 of neuralgia of the stomach. He was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Section 8, Lot 77.
His widow, who was paralyzed, filed for a widow's pension on Aug.6,1883 and received certificate # 205.145.
