West Virginia, USA
David Anderson, Jr. was a hard working coal miner of Irish descent. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Sprague (1899-1981) on October 28, 1918 in Coshocton just after he got his draft notice to go into the Army.
He worked at the Clow and Sons factory (makers of fire hydrants) in Coshocton as a crane operator. He went into the Army in 1918, but World War I ended just 2 months later. He was discharged after 2 years of service. David and Mary had 2 children: Robert Clifton Anderson and Georgia Elizabeth Anderson (later in life known as "Betty Smith", her married name).
In 1921 he took his family to Wheeling, West Virginia to work with his father at a coal mine there. The family was only there for a little more than a month when David contracted a perforated pyloris (peptic) ulcer. He died on the operating table from "surgical shock" (This type of shock that occured as a result of the surgical procedure. In this medical emergency the organs and tissues of his body did not receive an adequate flow of blood. This deprived the organs and tissues of oxygen, which is carried in the blood and allowed a buildup of waste products and, apparently, a bacterial infection). He was only 23 years old.
His young wife and 2 small children went back on the train to Coshocton, where his body lay in state at the home of his brother-in-law Clifford R. Sprague. He is buried in South Lawn Cemetery in Coshocton in a grave close to his father, David Anderson, Sr. and his mother Hannah Guilliams Anderson.
Unfortunately, there was never a gravestone placed over his plot. The cemetery records show the date of death as February 4, 1922, but that was actually the date he was interred. His death certificate shows the date of death was actually January 31, 1922. The grave remains unmarked to this day.
This fine man was my grandfather. I am proud of what he accomplished during the time he was on this earth.
