James McKell was born 1815 in the Jenkinsville, Fairfield District, South Carolina. He was the son of William & Elizabeth (née Bell) McKell.
Around 1838, with his mother and siblings: David (1813-1855), Jane (1821-1888) moved along with their Montgomery, Bell, McKell and Nason relations to Oktibbeha County, MS and settled in and around Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.
James married Jane Milling Harris, daughter of Dr. Benjamin F. and Mary Ann (née Milling) Harris. This union the following known children: William B. McKell (1840 – 1876), James McKell (1841), Charles A. McKell (1842 – 1844), Charles B. McKell, (1845 – 1846), Mary (1847), David McKell (1850-1890), Isabella McKell (1852-1941), Laura (1854) and Anna McKell (1851).
After Jane died in 1857, James married Miss Isabella Jane Mayes, daughter of Joseph and Nancy B. [née Simpson] Mayes on July 14th 1858; with whom he had a daughter Louisa (1860-1880).
"Departed this life on the 29th of August, 1867 in the vicinity of Starkville, Mr. James McKell in the 53rd year of his age..... He was a worthy member of the A. R. church, Starkville [Miss.].… He has left a widow with three sons and five daughters.
