John Woodrow Mangum, Jr. died at the age of 88 years old on September 20, 2005 in Rebecca, Turner County, Georgia. He died due to cardiac arrest that he suffered from 4 days prior to death and coronary artery disease. Contributing factors were also failure to thrive and chronic lung disease.
He was the son of John William Mangum (born Buford, Georgia) and Mildred Asilee Ambose (Mangum) who was born in Jackson County, Georgia. He had five siblings: Hubert (Herbert) Overby (who lived in Turner County but died in Tift County, Georgia), Lula Beatrice Mangum (Overby) who lived most of her live in Turner County but died In Bibb County (moved to be closer to family) at the age of 101; Dennis B. Mangum (1912-1986) of Rebecca, Georgia; Susan M. Mangum Haley (1915-1972), and Charles Ambrose Mangum (1922-1942)
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Navy. Other than his military tours, he lived the rest of his life in Rebecca, Turner County, Georgia by evidence of Federal Census. He was divorced.
According to the U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca. 1775-2006, he is buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Rebecca, Georgia.
