Capt. John Ewer Sword was the son of Capt. William Sword and Penelope Haley. On the 15th of February 1800, he married Ann Catharine Dunn, and to this union five children were born: Female Sword, James Brade Sword, Saran Dunn Sword, John Dorsey Sword and Ann Catharine Sword.

The family resided in Philadelphia until around 1804 when they removed to a 300 acre farm called "Spring Garden". The farm was situated along the Delaware River about one and half miles from the town of New Castle.

The Sword family was a merchant family of Philadelphia and New Castle, Delaware, who was prominent in the China trade.

John departed this life at 45 years of age. Tombstone reads: "Sacred to the memory of Capt. John Ewer Sword, who departed this life January 21, A.D. 1810 / Anno Aetatis 45."
