Margaret "Norine" Slater Furlong died on Thursday, October 7 in Seattle. She was 97 years old and lived a long and fulfilled life.
Norine was born the third of six children to Helen Louise and Edward James Slater on December 22, 1912 in St. Paul, MN. The family moved to the Oak Harbor area in 1913 and then to Seattle in 1918. She graduated from Highline High School in 1930.
On July 21, 1934, Norine married Richard Clarence (Clare) Furlong and they had one son, Jim in August, 1937 and she settled in West Seattle for the remainder of her life. The family joined Holy Rosary Parish in 1952 and after a move to the Gatewood area in 1961 they were founding members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in 1962 with Father Richard Stohr. It was there that their mutual love of flower gardening grew. They were members of both the Seattle Rose Society and the Seattle Fuchsia Society.
Norine retired from Pacific Northwest Bell in May 1974 and enjoyed her retirement by traveling, gardening and spending time with family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed cooking for her family, watching and listening to Seattle Mariners games and was an avid pinochle player.
Following Clare's death, Norine returned to Holy Rosary in 1987 where she was actively involved in many Parish activities and sponsored the restoration of the St. Vincent de Paul window near the rear of the church on the West wall at Holy Rosary Church, in honor of her family.
Norine was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her five siblings. She is survived by her son Jim, his wife Carolyn, four grandchildren, Richard, Claire, David and Julie, and three great grandchildren, Zoe Furlong, and Natalie and Evan Root.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, October 14 at Holy Rosary Church (4139 42nd Ave SW, West Seattle) at 10:30 am, followed by interment at Calvary cemetery (5041 35th Ave. NE, Seattle) at 1:30 pm.
