Illustrator. Known as the “Father of American Illustration”, he published and illustrated many books of fairy tales, fables and children’s stories. In the 1890s, he founded the first School of Illustration at Drexel Institute Philadelphia, the Howard Pyle School of Art Delaware and the Delaware Museum of Art. While in New York City, he was commissioned illustrating for Century Magazine, Collier’s, Everybody’s Magazine, Harper’s Weekly, Harper’s Monthly, Cosmopolitan, Ladies’ Home Journal and McClure’s Magazine. His illustrated books included “Howard Pyle’s Book of Pirates”, “The Story of King Arthur and his Knights”, “Men of Iron” and “The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood”. He also imaged prints, posters, banners and much of his works are on display in art museums and image archives worldwide. He died of a kidney infection at age 58. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
