DAVENPORT - Leslie Harold Christensen, 95, of Davenport, passed away at home October 7, 2008, in Blue Grass, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008, in Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Davenport.
Les was born April 29, 1913, in Grand Junction, Iowa, the son of Chris and Carrie (Benson) Christensen. He married Janet Miriam Barrie in 1944 in Davenport. They were later divorced. He served in the U.S. Army prior to World War II. During World War II he continued working at the Rock Island Arsenal with rifles and other machines. He received many awards for his input. When he retired after 34 years, he was a supervisor. Les also farmed in Muscatine County in Pleasant Prairie. He retired to own the Heritage Health Food Store in Moline, where he spent the next 30 years. Les had a great respect for the earth and mother nature. He was dedicated to the organic way of life and in sharing that life with others.
Survivors include children, Joan (Vern) Sund, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jane Makepeace, Atlanta, Ga., Les (Janet) Christensen, Jr., Waterloo, Iowa, Jennifer Christensen, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Bruce D. Christensen, Davenport; grandchildren, Julie (Tim) Eppler, Brian (Robin) Sund, Amy (Dustin) Thomas, Brian Mahan, John (Jessica) Eisenbrann, Annie Eisenbrann, Breanne and Kaleigh Russell, Andrea, Joanna, and Phillip Haig; great-grandchildren, Mabel Eppler and Parker Sund; and sisters, Doris Spieker, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Evie Hobstetter, Tipton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Stella Koba and Bernice Pzycka, and brothers , Cecil and Bernard Christensen.
