During his tenure he turned the organization into one of the leading voices for civil rights, and worked strenously to improve the economic, educational and living conditions of the Nation's African-Americans. He advised three Presidents on civil rights issues, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1981 he was honored by the United States Postal Service with a 15-cent commemorative postage stamp.
