Thomas Deadmond

Bedford County
Virginia, USA
Death: Sep. 20, 1851
Sandoval

Thomas married Elizabeth MIlliron, ( 27 Aug 1793 - 19 Feb 1862). They lived in Bedford Co., VA, Orange Co., NC and "Middle Tenn" before settling in Marion Co., IL, 1827/1828. He ran a trading post and was a Justice of the Peace.

Their 11 children, all born in NC, were:
1. Jerusha, md Peter Wilbourn
2. Joseph, md Susannah Wilbourn
3. Martha Susan, md John Wilkes Wilbourn
4. Bluford, md Emeline Adams, 31 Dec 1837, Marion Co.
5. Denisha,
6. Lutisha,
7. Narcissa, aged 22yrs 4 mo 7 days; md Aurthur Crawford, 30 Dec 1840.
8. Thomas,
9. Melisha,
10. James Gaston; Hunting accident:1843
11. John Henry. (J.H. settled in Eugene, OR, after disagreement over the Civil war with his brother Bluford and moved to the Oregon coast; where he acquired a cattle ranch, town property and a gold mine. Served in "Indian Wars", OR, 1855, and resided in Port Orford, OR.)

Thomas died, at age 67, on the land which he had planned on staying for just one winter. "Winter caught them before they could get settled, and they built a 3-sided log cabin. They drug 6-8' logs with their team to the 4th side/open end of the cabin and burned it for heat. The following summer horn flies were so bad that both man and beast couldn't work in the open but had to stay in the thick woods as much as possible."*

The Deadmond cemetery is located on this land, 4 miles from Sandoval, where generations of Deadmonds and Wilbourns were buried. "The Deadmond cemetery was originally started when a sick old native American guy came knocking on their door one night during the winter. They had tried to get him back to health, but couldn't. When he died, they buried him under a tree at the bottom of a hill, with a big rock as his headstone. You can still see the rock today, but its harder to find because its surrounded by bushes and trees." **
