Herbert was the first ADK 46R. He and the Marshall brothers,
George and Robert, all climbed together, and were the first three 46ers. Their first ascent was Whiteface, on August 1 1918, and their 46th peak was Emmons on June 10 1925. Herbert was about 30 years older than the brothers, and was their mentor.
