William House
Birth: Oct. 7, 1879
Death: Feb. 28, 1912

Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award on October 7, 1902 for his actions as a private in the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) of the British Army on August 2, 1900 at Mosilikatse, Nek, South Africa during the Second Boer War. Born William John House in Thatcham, Berkshire, England, he joined the British Army in 1896 and was sent to South Africa following the outbreak of the Second Boer War in October 1899. Following his service in South Africa, he served in India and returned to England. He was promoted to the rank of lance corporal and remained in the British Army until his death from an apparent suicide at Dover, Kent, England at the age of 32. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the Queen's South African Medal. His Victoria Cross citation reads: " During the attack on Mosilikatse Nek, on 2nd August, 1900, when a Sergeant, who had gone forward to reconnoitre, was wounded, Private House rushed out from cover (though cautioned not to do so, as the fire from the enemy was very hot), picked up the wounded Sergeant, and endeavoured to bring him into shelter, in doing which Private House was himself severely wounded. He, however, warned his comrades not to come to his assistance, the fire being so severe." His Victoria Cross is on display at The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire, and Wiltshire Regimental Museum at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
