Virgil M. Faulkner, 85

Virgil M. Faulkner, 85, of Blair, died Sept 23, 2000, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday Sept 26, at the Blair Cemetery.

Virgil M. Faulkner was born on Dec. 13, 1914, to Jason and May (Johnson) Faulkner, at Edgemont, S.D. He lived and worked on farms and ranches in that area prior to attending and graduating from the University of South Dakota in 1941.

Mr. Faulkner served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Following his army service, he taught band and math in public schools in South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, Washington and California for 25 years. He also worked as a small town newspaper editor, radio announcer and radio engineer. For many years, Mr. Faulkner played trumpet in dance bands, and had his own band for a time.

Mr. Faulkner married Madeline Sell; they had two daughters. In 1971, he married Evelyn Welton in Vermilion, S.D.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughters Margo Land of Oregon and Denise Harrington of California; a step-daughter, Janice (Mrs. Ray) Jensen of Blair; a brother, a sister, 13 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
