WILLIAM BRACKEN DIES AT AGE 83

TEN CHIILDREN SURVIVE THE FORMER WELL-KNOWN BLAIR RESIDENT

William Newton Bracken, 83, for years a well-known resident of Blair, died at his home in Omaha, where he had lived with five daughters since 1918, after a lingering illness of infirmities incident to old age. He would have been 84 years old had he lived until June 30. Until a few months ago Mr. Bracken was well and active, considering his age, and he was a frequent visitor to Blair, where he visited with his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Sylvis, and her family. He had failed rapidly of late, however.

Mr. Bracken was born June 30, 1849, in East Wheatfield township, Pennsylvania, and after a boyhood spent on the farm he soon took up railroad work, becoming a carpenter for an eastern line. He was married in 1871, and in 1879 he and his wife moved to Nebraska, locating in Blair. He entered the employ of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha railway as a carpenter, and remained with that company for more than 25 years, when he retired. At the time he severed his connection with the railroad he was a foreman. Mrs. Bracken died in 1922 in Omaha.

Funeral services for Mr. Bracken were held Tuesday afternoon from the Free Methodist Church with Rev. J.V. Bagley of Omaha officiating. Burial was in the Blair cemetery. Six grandsons of the deceased served as pallbearers. The crowd that thronged the church and the profusion of floral offerings were evidence of the esteem in which Mr. Bracken was held.

Surviving Mr. Bracken are ten children, one having preceded the father in death. The children are Thomas F. Bracken of Emerson, Charles of Norfolk, Stanley of LaGrange, Illinois, Mrs. W.J. Clarke of Benson, Mrs. Mabel Sylvis of Blair, and Blair, Angeline Ora, Ruth and Helen, who live at home. Clara is a registered nurse and the other daughters are instructors in the Omaha city schools. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

With the exception of Stanley and Thomas, all the children were with their father at the time he died. Thomas had been with his father earlier in the day and had left for his home at Emerson, and Stanley had been in Omaha the week previous for a visit. All of the children were present for the funeral service.
