JOHN BLAKELY DALES, D. D., LL. D.
Son of Hugh and Margaret (Blakely)Dales; born at Kortright, Delaware Co., N. Y., Aug. 6, 1815; He attended the Temple Hill (N.Y.) academy and graduated from Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., in 1835; prosecuted theological study at Newburgh Seminary; was ordained May 15, 1839, an Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister by the Associate Reformed Presbytery of New York; was ordained June 4, 1840, by the same Presbytery ; was pastor of the Second United Presbyterian (formerly First Associate Reformed) Church, Philadelphia, Penna., 1840 until death; editor of Christian Instructor, 1844-1878; professor of Pastoral Theology in Newburgh Theological Seminary, 1867-/876; secretary of Board of Foreign
Missions of the Associate Reformed Church from its organization until the union that formed the United Presbyterian Church, and then corresponding secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of that Church from its organization in 1859 until death; member of Board of Directors in Allegheny Theological Seminary, 1881-1891; elected honorary director in same institution in 1892; member and president of Board of Ministerial Relief; moderator of General Assembly in 1867; moderator of Synod of New York in
1861; stated clerk of. Synod of New York, 1863 until death; delegate to Presbyterian Council in 1880; member of Board of Managers of the Philadelphia Bible Society, and for many years its president; director of Philadelphia Sabbath Association ; member, and for a long period secretary, of the Presbyterian Historical Society; was a frequent contributor to periodical literature. Publications: "Roman Catholicism," a sermon; " The Dangers. and Duties of Young Men," a sermon; History of the Associate Re-formed Church and of its Missions, in the Church Memorial; biographical sketches of Dr. John Mason and Dr. Thomas Clark, in Sprague s Annals; "The Gospel Minister;" a sermon; History of the United Presbyterian Church, in Sehaff-Herzog Encyclopedia. He received the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1854 from Muskingum College, and of Doctor of Laws in 1888 from Westminster College. Dr. Dales was married three times — to Miss Hannah Leiper Henan, July 21, 1840, who lived but a short time; to Mrs. Elizabeth Dickson McKee, April 4, 1843, who died in about three years; and on Sept. 16, 1856, to Mrs. Eliza J. Stewart, who died in 1887. He died at Chautauqua, N. Y., on August 21, 1893, from prostration, resulting from attacks of acute indigestion.
