Hastings Edward Harington
Birth: Nov. 9, 1832
Death: Jul. 20, 1861

Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. A deeply religious person, he received the award from British Queen Victoria in June 1859 for his actions as a lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery of the British Indian Army on January 29, 1856 at Lucknow, India. Born in Hinton Parva, Wiltshire, England, his father served as a minister. At age 17, he entered the Military College at Addiscombe, Croydon, London, England and in September 1852 he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery and sent to India, serving at Peshawar and Sealkote. During the 1857 Indian Mutiny, he saw action at Trimmoo Ghat, where he was wounded, and also at the Siege of Delhi followed by Maligurh Fort, Allygurh, and Agra. He was present for the Relief of Lucknow where he was seriously wounded, for which his heroism won him the Victoria Cross. Following the end of the Indian Mutiny, he returned to England for surgery to remove a bullet he had received at Rooyah, India during pursuit of the Indian rebels after the Relief of Lucknow. Following his recuperation, he returned to British India and was appointed adjutant of the 6th Battalion Bengal Army in the Sikkim Field Force at Agra, India and achieved the rank of captain. He died from cholera in Agra at the age of 29. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "Lieutenant Hastings Edward Harrington [and [four] others]: Elected respectively, under the 13th clause of the Royal Warrant of the 29th of January, 1856, by the Officers and non-commissioned officers generally, and by the private soldiers of each troop or battery, for conspicuous gallantry at the relief of Lucknow, from the 14th to the 22nd of November, 1857." (bio by: William Bjornstad)
