Alois Abele Joins the Ranks of the Silent Majority.
The Funeral Service Will be Held on Thursday, May 12th, at Half Past 9.
Alois Abele, an old and respected citizen of Yolo county, passed away peacefully at his residence, two and one half miles west of Cacheville at twenty minutes after 9 o'clock Monday evening.
About a year ago Mr. Abele was stricken with a partial stroke of paralysis. His hands and tongue were more affected than any other part of his body. However, the affliction did not confine him to his bed and he was able to move about and do light work till the day of his death.
He was in Woodland on Monday and transacted business as usual, among other things selling his wheat. He returned home in the afternoon apparently as well as usual. After supper he complained of feeling tired and rested on the sofa for a short time. About half past 8 o'clock he was assisted upstairs and to bed, and a few minutes later he evidently felt that the hour of dissolution was approaching, as he called for those of his family who were home around him, and requested that they pray for him. He failed rapidly and at the hour above stated passed away peacefully and quietly as if he had fallen into a gentle slumber.
The deceased was a native of Wurtemburg, German, where he was born on the 7th of August, 1826. He therefore lacked but a few months of being 72 years of age. His parents died when he was fourteen years of age. When he was twenty-five years of age he came to the United States, locating in Buffalo, New York. For several years he followed his trade of cooper. He then went to Canada, where he remained one year. He returned to Buffalo, but remained only a short time, going thence to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he remained two years. Once more he returned to Canada, where he conducted a cooper-shop of his own for three years. He then came to California, via the Isthmus, locating in Yolo county. He worked as a day laborer until 1862, when he purchased the tract of 1,120 acres west of Cacheveille, on which he ever afterward made his home.
In 1856 the deceased married Miss Theckla Hermle, who is also a native of Wurtemberg. To them nine children were born, of whom seven are still living. They are Joseph, Alois and John, all residents of Yolo county; Mrs. Francisco Lawson, of Woodland, Mrs. Josephine Riley and Mrs. Mary Ready, of Sacramento, and Mrs. Ragena Black, of Yolo county. The deceased also adopted a grandson, Joseph Wetzel, now known as Joseph Abele, when he was as a mere child.
The funeral procession will leave the family residence at half-past 9 o'clock Thursday morning, May 12th. Services will be held in the Catholic Church and interment will take place in the Catholic cemetery.
Alois Abele was a useful, honorable and highly-respected citizen, and his loss will be keenly felt in the community in which he so long lived. He was a devoted and faithful husband and a kind, affection and indulgent father, and the whole community deeply sympathizes with the bereaved wife and children.
