LIFE STORY OF JOHN BLUM, 89

Funeral rites for John J. Blum, 89, of Manning, Iowa, were held Friday morning, April 14, 1967 at Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Iowa, with Rev. P. J. Nooney officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery, with grandsons as pallbearers. The Rosary was prayed at the Ohde Funeral Home Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Blum, he was born February 27, 1878 in Westphalia, Iowa and attended rural schools there. He married Mary Schwarte in Westphalia, Iowa in 1899. She died in 1902. He then married Mary Bier in 1905 at Westphalia, Iowa, and they farmed near Panama, Iowa and Defiance, Iowa. In 1937 they moved to a farm near Manning, Iowa, and in 1945 retired to town. Mrs. Blum died shortly thereafter.

For the past two and one half years, he had lived at the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, and died there Tuesday evening, April 11, 1967. He was preceded in death by his two wives and three children: Martin and Aloysius "Al" Blum and Mrs. Frank (Bertha) Von Tersch.

He is survived by the following children: Leonard of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. Leo (Cecelia) Miller of Bozeman, Montana; Leo of Manning, Iowa; Lawrence and Cletus of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Thomas (Genevieve "Jenny") Sheahan of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. Gaylord "Bud" (Jeanette) Rushenberg of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Roland (Agnes "Peggy") Huebner of Manilla, Iowa; Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Knobbe of Auburn, Iowa; Josephine Blum and Mrs. LaVerne (Marie) Collison of Boone, Iowa; 51 grandchildren; and a number of great and great-great grandchildren.

(NOTE: Edited and corrected from original copy due to numerous errors. See below)

Original copy states he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Blum. The 1880 United States Federal Census and the 1925 Iowa State Census both show his parents as Joseph Blum and Katharina Kaufman. Birthdate was originally shown as 27 Dec 1878, the 1900 United States Federal Census shows Feb 1878, his 1918 Draft Registration Card shows 27 Feb 1878 and the Social Security Death Index also show 27 Feb 1878. His first wife Mary Schwarte died in 1902 (as seen on her grave marker), instead of 1904 as stated in original copy. He married his second wife Mary Bier on 27 Nov 1905 according to Shelby County Marriage Records (their first son Lawrence Michael Blum was born 13 Oct 1906), original copy stated they were married in 1907.
