SERVICES FOR HULDA DIXON CANCELLED BY SNOW STORM

Funeral services for Hulda Dixon, former Ft. Calhoun resident who has been living in Fremont, were postponed Friday by the blizzard which occurred that day.

She was born at Ft. Calhoun September 12, 1908 and grew up there. She was a graduate of Ft. Calhoun High School. After the death of her husband she moved to Fremont to make her home. She died January 6th at the Fremont Hospital. The couple had no children.

Mrs. Dixon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fremont and it was planned to hold services at that place. Interment was to be in Blair. Due to the blizzard which was raging that day, the services were cancelled and interment was made at the Blair cemetery Tuesday with graveside services only.

FUNERAL PARTY SLEPT ON COTS FROM JAIL CELLS

One of the stories coming out of the storm is that of Ft. Calhoun mortician Richard Sievers and members of a funeral group he was leading.

Sievers had made it to Blair with his hearse bearing the body of Hulda Dixon, former Ft. Calhoun resident. Mrs. Dixon was to be buried at Blair, but services were to be held at Fremont where she had lived in recent years.

A county snowplow broke the drifts for the hearse from Ft. Calhoun to Blair. But conditions were such that the funeral party had to give up the project here. Sievers realized he could not return to Ft. Calhoun so he went to the County Sheriff’s office at the courthouse.

Some members of the funeral party went to the homes of friends in Blair. Others called upon Sheriff Jim Kelley for help.

Kelley, who happened to be enjoying slack business at the jail, took the mattresses from the jail cots and arranged them in a basement hallway of the courthouse and four men from the funeral party slept there for the night.

The funeral services in Fremont were cancelled and the body was interred in the Blair cemetery Monday with graveside services.
