George served as a Private in Company H of the 8th Vermont Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted and mustered in on September 1, 1864, and was wounded at Cedar Creek (Virginia) on October 19, 1864. George mustered out on June 1, 1865.

On February 26, 1867, George married Thankful H Allen in Wardsboro, Vermont.
