OLEAN - Fred J. Ash of 211 N. Fourth St. passed away Friday (June 28, 2013) at Olean General Hospital following a brief illness.
Fred was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Olean, and was a son of John Joseph and Adele Simon Ash Sr. On Jan. 2, 1956, at St. John Marion Catholic Church in Buffalo, he married his wife of 54 years, Mary Louise Watt, who predeceased him April 5, 2010.
Fred graduated from Olean High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Sept. 7, 1943, to March 7, 1946.
Fred worked at the family's business, John J. Ash Cleaners, during high school and after he returned from his service and throughout his whole career.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with family.
Fred is survived by three sons, Mark R. (Patricia) Ash of Hinsdale, Steven M. Ash of Naples and Charles A. Ash of Canandaigua; two daughters, Mary Ellen Ash of Olean and Susan M. (Kevin) Shea of Buffalo; six grandchildren, Kelsey and Nicholas Shea and Madeline, C.J., Marisa and Luke Ash; seven siblings, Emil Ash of Olean, Nick Ash of Olean, Robert Ash of Olean, Elizabeth Ash of Olean, Mary Jane (Charles) Bredehoft of McLean, Va., John Ash Jr. of Olean and Adelle (Louis) Joseph of Anaheim, Calif.
Along with his loving wife, Fred was predeceased by one sister, Amelia Shaheen; one brother, Joseph J. Ash, on June 24, 2013.
Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Church, 931 N. Union St.; or to the Olean General Hospital Foundation, 515 Main St., Olean, NY 14760.
