Susan Hightower was born March 17, 1811 in Charleston County, S.C., a daughter of Thomas Hightower and Nancy Mason.

In Cocke County, Tenn., around 1828, she married Allen Clevenger, son of Elias Clevenger and Nancy Wood.

Their children were Annanias, Sarah, Nancy, Allen Jr., William, Carson, Harriett, Jerome and Columbus.

Susan, widowed for 2 decades, was living with her son Columbus when she died Aug. 22, 1880.

Allen Jr. married Matilda Lillard. He served as a Union soldier in the Civil War. He died in Cocke County in his late 30s.

Allen and Susan's son Jerome and his wife Belona Frakes are buried in the Old Allen Cemetery in Ray County, Mo. He has a Find-A-Grave memorial (with his name misspelled).

Their son William raised a family in Cocke County, probably in the Cave Hill area. There is little documentation of his marriage and descendants, although some may be buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery (verification lacking). William's son Isaac lived in the Wilsonville Community. His wife was Rhoda Holloway, daughter of Joseph Holloway Jr. and Mary Jane Hall.
