| Birth: | Dec., 1832 | | Death: | Jan. 8, 1887 | Zulu Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, He served as a Commissary Staff Sergeant in the Royal British Army Service Corps. On the night of January 22, 1879, at Rorke's Drift, Natal, South Africa, he was serving as Acting Assistant Commissary, when his company's position was attacked by ensuing Zulu warriors. He quickly superintended his work at the first attack and went to defend the corner of the hospital, where a deadly fire checked the rush of the enemy. There he saved the life of a man in the Army Hospital Corps by shooting the Zulus who were attacking and although wounded himself, he continued to defend others and repel the enemy until the threat was suspended. For gallantry in the face of the enemy and courage throughout this action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross in November 1879. He died in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, at age 53.
