Dr. Joseph Hall was a Union Civil War veteran who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg.
He enlisted in Company I, 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant Major on September 2, 1862. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on August 2 1864. Commissioned as a staff officer (regimental adjutant) of the 183rd Pennsylvania Infantry on September 7, 1864. Mustered out on of the army on July 13, 1865 at Washington, DC.
Dr. Hall graduated from the Brookville Academy, then took an undergraduate degree at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. In 1869 he received the M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Hall married Frances Irene Jenks, daughter of Hon. William P. Jenks, on September 12, 1872. Mrs. Hall passed away in 1877.
Following his second marriage he went with his family to Oregon where he practiced medicine for the rest of his life. Dr. Hall served in the Oregon legislature and as Justice of the Peace in Clatskanie.
Dr. Hall was active in the Grand Army of the Republic and served as medical director and Department Commander of the Oregon GAR.
