Mrs. Arthur Astin Fredrick, 78, a long-time Milton resident, died Jan. 2 at Rock Haven Nursing Home, Janesville. She had resided at Carlyle Nursing Home, Beloit, Health Care Center and Rock Haven, Janesville, for the past five years.
The former Gertrude Astin was born Feb. 19, 1901, at Crandon, Wis., the daughter of Shirley and Lottie Rockwell Astin. She married Mr. Fredrick June 1, 1927, in Milton. He died in 1955.
She graduated from Whitewater State Normal School in 1921, coached girls basketball at Milton Union High School and was employed as a housemother at Milton College from 1958 to 1968, commonly known as Mom Fred. She was also active in community leadership, serving as a Sunday school teacher, 4-H leader and a PTA member.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Elmer and George.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald of Milton, and Robert, of Viroqua; one brother, Lynn (Sie) Astin, of Milton; and one sister, Mabel (Mrs. Phil) Hull and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 4, at Hope Lutheran Church, located at 720 E. Madison Ave., Milton, with burial in Milton Cemetery.
