Helen A. Prowant, 89, of East Eighth Street, Watsontown, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Edward and Judy E. Loreman, Eisenhower Road, Catawissa, with whom she had been living for a few years.

Born Jan. 18, 1913, in Lewis Township, Northumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Susie (Walter) Strouse.

Mrs. Prowant was a 1930 graduate of Turbotville High School where she was valedictorian. She took several classes at the formoer Williamsport Tecnical School, as well as adult education courses at Warrior Run High School.

Her husband of 58 years, Floyd W. Prowant, died Jan. 11, 1992. She and her late husband had owned and sperated a grocery store in Watsontown for more that 20 years, until 1961. Mrs Prowant was then employed in the cafeteria of Watsontown Elementary School until retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the Watsontown Alliance Church. In her earlier years, she had been a Sunday school teacher at Trinity United Church of Christ, Watsontown, for 30 years.

Mrs. Prowant was a member and past president of the Northern Northmberland Senior Action Center, Dewart, where she and her late husband were instrumental in organizing the "Kitchen Band." She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and had been recognized in 1990 by the Watsontown community for 50 consecutive years of voting, and had not missed voting since then.

In addition to the daughter with whom she lived, Mrs Prowant is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Sharr, Turbotville; seven grandchildred; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, two brothers died previously: W. George and Walter Strouse, as did a sister, Thelma Strouse.

Fruneral services will be 11a.m. Wednesday at Watsontown Alliance Church, with her pastor, the Rev. Donald Jones, officiating. Burial will follow in the Watsontown Cemetery, under the direction of the Brooks Funeral Home, 207 Broadwaty St., Turbotville.
