McCheane, who came to Omaha in 1857 and was the third woman to be employed by the Union Pacific, starting with that company in 1873 and retiring on pension in 1909, died February 5 at Long Beach, Cal. where she went a year ago for her health. Apoplexy was the cause of death. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. C. W. Axtell, 119 North Thirty-second street, and Mrs. F. M. Barnard, of Paducah, Ky.
Born in Erie, Pa., Miss McCheane came to Omaha with her parents by way of St. Joseph, Mo., where a boat was taken up the river. During her long term of service with the Union Pacific she was employed in the freight claim department.
The funeral will be held at the Axtell residence, the date to be announced later. Mr. Axtell is assistant general freight agent of the Union Pacific."
