The Oswego Daily Times (Oswego, NY), 4 Apr 1891

The TIMES noted briefly yesterday the death of Joseph Arden, one of the oldest residents of Oswego, in Lansing, at the age of 88 years. Deceased was born in Connecticut in 1804 and came to Oswego in 1814. While yet a youth he went to Rochester, where he learned the trade of a shoemaker, which he followed for fifty years. In 1829 he returned to Oswego where he married Miss Clarrisa Sutton. Mr. Arden was here at an early day and was well acquainted with the early history of Oswego. He brought up a family of eleven children, eight boys and three girls, of whom five sons, Moses, George, James and Alonzo, and two daughters, Angeline and Charlotte, survive him. The interment takes place at Riverside.
The Oswego Palladium (Oswego, NY), 4 Apr 1891

Joseph Arden, whose death was announced Thursday, was one of the oldest and best known residents of Oswego. He was a native of Connecticut, was born 1804 and came to Oswego at the age of ten years. He lived here continuously from that time, with the exception of a short sojourn in Rochester where he learned the trade of a shoemaker, which he followed in this city for half a century. He was married in 1829 in this city to Claressa Sutton, who died in 1886. Eleven children were born to them, seven of whom survive--James, Alonzo, Angeline and Charlotte of this city, Moses and Milton of Rochester and George of Syracuse. The deceased was respected and beloved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a sturdy Democrat. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the residence of his son, James Arden, No. 183 East Fifth street. Burial will be at Riverside and the Rev. Mr. Palmer of the First Baptist church will conduct the services.
