Isaac was born into a large family, the sixth of nine children born to his parents plus three older half sisters from his fathers's first marriage. His father David was a farmer died in the prime of his live of smallpox after Isaac attained majority but left several minor children.
Issac appears on the muster rolls of Perry County volunteers who served in the Mexican War of 1846-48. He also became Postmaster of New Bloomfield, Perry County, during James Buchanan's presidency - 1857-1861.
Isaac is found first in the 1850 census living with his mother and youngest sister born weeks after his father's death. At the time he was a chain measurer - evidently surveying. By 1860 his profession was dentistry which he followed to the end of his working career.
In 1875 he auctioned off his home and property in New Bloomfield and moved to Putnam County, Ohio, where several of his relatives lived.
