Isaac's parents, John and Mary Free, came with other family members from South Carolina to Tennessee around the time of Isaac's birth.
Isaac and Mary Cooper married in Jefferson County on Nov. 12, 1843. They resided in and raised their family in Cocke County.
The 1860 census had Isaac, age 36, and Mary, 35, living in Cocke County. Their children were Margaret, 14; Elbert, 13; Elijah, 10; Rufus, 8; Sarah, 6; Isaac Jr., 4; and Allen, 1. Alice and Joseph were born later.
Apparently, some data processing has blended or mixed-up data from Isaac Sr. and his son, Isaac Jr. These sites report, without specifics, that Isaac and Mary died in Sevier County. But other family researchers--including JoAnn (Free) Brotherton, daughter of Mitchell Free, who was a great-grandson of Isaac and Mary--are confident Isaac and Mary were lifelong residents of Cocke County. They point out that Isaac Jr., not Sr., owned property in Sevier County and died there but was buried in Union Cemetery-Newport. In which case, Isaac Sr. and his wife were likely buried in the Free Family Cemetery (Free-Clevenger Cemetery), where most century-old and older graves are unmarked or marked with unreadable stones.
Based on information assembled by Free descendants, Isaac died around 1872 in Cocke County.
