Born in Cumberland County, the son of William K. & Mary (Schaefer) Cornman, in 1850, lived with and/or worked for farmer Peter A. Diller in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County. In 1860, he presumably lived in North Middleton Township. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle August 5, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. A, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in both thighs and captured at the battle of Antietam and paroled at Academy Hospital, Chambersburg, October 11, 1862. He was hospitalized at - and discharged the service - from the U.S. hospital at Broad & Cherry streets, Philadelphia, and received a 1/2 disability pension in 1863. Nonetheless, he enlisted in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, February 3, 1865, as a corporal with the second organization Co. D, 78th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to sergeant June 3, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company September 11, 1865. He came home with a case of "chronic diarrhea," i.e., dysentery that contributed to his early demise.
He married Catherine H. "Kate" Reneker October 22, 1866, in Siddonsburg, York County, and fathered Claude Leander (b. 08/14/67) and Anna Belle (b. 02/27/71 - married Talbot A. Hoover) and died January 4, 1871. The widowed Kate married John Meloy October 25, 1875, in Mechanicsburg.
