In 1972, he joined the Edgar Winter Group, played bass on three of their albums, and wrote the band's second biggest pop hit, "Free Ride." He launched a solo career in 1976 and wrote the song "Instant Replay," which hit number 1 on the disco charts. His other hits included "Heart of the Beat," "We Are the Young," "Second Nature," "Why Should I Worry?" and "I Can Dream About You," which was featured in the film "Streets of Fire" (1984). He also re-recorded a version of "Free Ride," which was used in the film "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" (1995). Hartman was never married and had no children. He was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s, but never sought treatment, and kept his status a secret. He died on March 22, 1994, at his Westport, Connecticut, home from a brain tumor, at the age of 43. His remains were cremated.
