Major General, United States Air Force.
He attended the United States Military Academy in 1917, Airship School in 1921, Air Corps Tactical School in 1932 and Command and General Staff School in 1935. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Field Artillery, on April 1917 and became a Major in the Air Service in August 1918. His career assignments included various duties as company and field grade officer from 1918 to 1940, Chief of Staff in the Fourth Air Force from 1940 to 1941, Chief of Staff Air Service Command from 1941 to 1942, Commanding General of the Eleventh Air Force from 1942 to 1943. He was appointed Deputy Air Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force. Major-General William O. Butler was the first General Officer to hold this post. He served in this capacity from 1st January, 1944, to 25th May 1944.

This William Ormond Butler is the son of Robert Ormond Butler b. 21 Feb 1863 and Mary McGeorge Hume b. 7 Dec. 1863, both of whom are also buried in the Marshall cem. in Marshall, with Robert Ormond called "Ormond Butler" on his stone. Robert Ormond Butler was the son of Dr. William Wilson Samuel Butler and his wife Mary B. _?_ who lived in Harrisonburg and later Roanoke; they and 3 of Robert Ormond Butler's siblings (W. W. S. Jr., Charlotte L., and Charles) are shown in the 1880 census of Rockingham Co. VA
